In Which We Grew
This installation examines the complexity, and at times, the ambiguity of emotions held by the women in my family and spaces where these emotions exist. As I rediscover family photos, I’ve seen all my life, the same questions arise; what was on their mind? What were their worries or fears at that moment? Do they feel the same uncertainty that I do at times? I consider the existence of these parallels between the women in my family who experienced girlhood in vastly different circumstances, as I ponder my transition from girl to young woman.
The paintings, combined with audio elements of my household, call to the physical space that makes up the family and home. In these spaces, we learn to navigate our relationships with ourselves and others - until we eventually leave and create our own version of the spaces in which we grew.
